A tour of Lake Garda to discover its castles for a bit of culture and to admire the wonders of the area from a privileged position.
The tour starts from the castle closest to us:
The Scaligero Castle of Sirmione, built on Roman remains, in about 1278, by Mastino I della Scala, lord of Verona.
The visit allows you to climb the tower and walkways of the walls and from there admire the suggestive dock, an ancient refuge of the Scaligera fleet and, of course, a beautiful panorama.
Continuing along the Lombard coast you will find:
The Castle of Desenzano del Garda standing on a hill from which you can admire the village and the lake. It was built in the communal era and strengthened until, in the sixteenth century, it came to enclose 120 houses and a church dedicated to St. Ambrose within its walls.
Padenghe sul Garda Castle is an ancient stronghold dating back to the twelfth century. The structure stands on a hill overlooking the town. Inside the walls, there are still some houses divided by two streets. In autumn you can appreciate the suggestive colors of the foliage of the surrounding woodlands.
The Castle of Moniga (10th century), among the fortified villages built on the Garda hills, is one of the best preserved. It is a castle-shelter (from the Latin receptum = refuge): an aggregation of houses where the population of the surrounding village took refuge in case of danger.
A curiosity: in the period of the barbarian invasions, an ingenious connection system developed between the various castles in the area thanks to which, through the use of precise signals, it was possible to warn of the danger from here to the city of Brescia (25 km far).
Going up to the northern part of the lake, in the Trentino area you will find La Rocca di Riva del Garda, a medieval fortress located on an artificial islet, which is also one of the two headquarters of the MAG – Alto Garda Museum.

Going south along the Eastern shore, worth a stop is the Scaligero Castle of Malcesine built at the end of the first millennium BC. by the Lombards. Over the centuries, the various conquerors modified it according to their needs until, in the summer of 1902, it was declared a National Monument.
In the “Goethe room” it is possible to admire some watercolors made by the German intellectual during his famous trip to Italy: glimpses of the lake and the Malcesine of the time.
The Castle of Torri del Benaco, of Roman origin, was enlarged in 1300 by Antonio della Scala – Italian politician and military, lord of Verona – to defend its territories from the expansionist aims of the Visconti of Milan.
Today the Castle hosts two attractions of considerable interest: the ethnographic museum and one of the last citrus greenhouses in the Garda region, dating back to the mid-1700s.

The Scaligero Castle of Lazise, with its military port, was also part of the complex of defensive works in the Verona area prepared by the della Scala.
In the nineteenth century the castle was bought by Count Burri, who restored it by transforming the small port of the ancient castle into a romantic garden with palm trees, cedars and two huge magnolia plants. He also built the majestic Bernini villa inside.

Once in Lazise, if you are traveling with children, why not feast while enjoying an exciting medieval tournament? This is possible at Medieval Times (in October on Saturday and Sunday evenings)

D’in su la vetta della torre antica,
Passero solitario, alla campagna
Cantando vai finchè non more il giorno;
Ed erra l’armonia per questa valle.
(Giacomo Leopardi)
Solitary sparrow, you sing
from the crest of the ancient tower
to the landscape, until day dies:
and harmony wanders the valley.
(Giacomo Leopardi)
